If you move food, flowers, medicine or anything else that has to stay cold, your refrigeration unit is the heart of the operation. Thermo King is one of the best known names in transport refrigeration, and their units are used by fleets all over the world. Here is a simple guide to help you choose the right one.
What Does a Reefer Unit Do?
A reefer unit keeps the inside of a trailer, truck box or container at a set temperature. Depending on the model and setup, it can cool, freeze or even heat cargo to protect it from the weather outside. Most units have a controller that lets you set and monitor the temperature during the whole trip.
Trailer Units vs Truck Units
Trailer units mount on the front of a semi trailer and are built for long-haul work and large loads. Thermo King’s Precedent series is a popular trailer option.
Truck units are made for straight trucks and box trucks. They are smaller and suit local delivery, catering and regional routes.
New vs Used Units
A new unit gives you the latest technology, better fuel efficiency and full manufacturer support. A quality used unit can save you a lot of money and still give you years of service if it has been maintained well. When buying used, ask about engine hours, service history and whether the unit has been tested.
What to Check Before You Buy
- Engine hours: Lower hours usually mean more life left in the unit.
- Temperature range: Make sure the unit can hit the temperatures your cargo needs, especially for frozen loads.
- Fit: Confirm the unit matches your trailer or truck size and mounting.
- Controller: A clear, working controller makes it easier to monitor loads and log temperatures.
- Maintenance records: Regular service is a good sign the unit was cared for.
Keeping Your Unit Running
Routine maintenance goes a long way. Change filters and oil on schedule, keep the condenser clean and check belts and refrigerant levels. A well cared for unit runs more efficiently and is less likely to fail in the middle of a delivery.
Need Power for a Reefer Container?
If you are running refrigerated containers, you may also need a clip-on genset to power them on the road. Check out our clip-on generator range alongside our reefer units.
