Few things beat a fresh snowfall and an open trail. Whether you are new to riding or upgrading your sled, choosing the right snowmobile depends on where you ride and how you like to ride. Here is a quick guide.

Types of Snowmobiles

Trail sleds: Built for groomed trails with comfortable suspension and shorter tracks. Great for most riders.
Mountain sleds: Long, tall tracks and lightweight builds for deep powder and steep climbs.
Crossover sleds: A mix of trail and mountain, so you can ride groomed trails and still play in deeper snow. Sleds like the Ski-Doo Renegade fall into this group.
Performance sleds: Powerful engines and advanced suspension for aggressive riders.
Utility sleds: Built for towing, hauling and work around farms, cabins and remote properties.

Engine Size and Type

Smaller engines are easier to handle and more fuel efficient, which makes them great for beginners. Larger engines, like 800cc models, deliver more power for deep snow and fast trail riding. Two-stroke engines are light and punchy, while four-stroke engines tend to be quieter and use less fuel.

Track Length

Shorter tracks turn quickly and work best on packed trails. Longer tracks float better in deep powder and climb more easily but are less nimble on tight trails.

Buying a Used Snowmobile

Mileage: Ask how many miles the sled has and how it was ridden.
Track and skis: Look for missing lugs, tears and worn carbides.
Suspension: Check shocks for leaks and the rails and wheels for wear.
Engine: A cold start and smooth idle are good signs. Ask about maintenance records.
Storage: Sleds stored indoors and properly prepped for summer usually hold up better.

Gear and Extras

Budget for a helmet, warm riding gear and a trailer to haul your sled. Heated grips, a windshield and storage bags make long rides much more comfortable.
