A horse trailer is a big investment, and it carries your most valuable cargo. Whether you haul one horse to weekend trail rides or a full string to shows across the country, the right trailer makes every trip safer and easier. Here is what to know.
Bumper Pull vs Gooseneck
Bumper pull trailers hitch to the back of your truck or SUV. They are usually lighter, more affordable and easier to store. They are a good fit for one to three horses.
Gooseneck trailers hitch into the bed of a pickup. They are more stable when towing, turn tighter and can carry more horses and gear. Most living quarters trailers are goosenecks.
Slant Load vs Straight Load
In a slant load trailer, horses stand at an angle, which lets you fit more horses in a shorter trailer. In a straight load trailer, horses face forward side by side. Some horses travel better one way than the other, so think about what your horses are used to.
Living Quarters Trailers
If you travel to shows, rodeos or long trail rides, a living quarters (LQ) trailer gives you a place to sleep, cook and clean up right next to your horses. Options range from simple weekender packages to full setups with slide-outs, kitchens and bathrooms.
What to Check Before You Buy
- Towing capacity: Make sure your truck can safely pull the loaded trailer.
- Size and height: Larger horses need taller and wider stalls.
- Floor: Check for rot, rust or soft spots, especially on used trailers. Lift the mats and look.
- Frame and hitch: Look for cracks or heavy rust.
- Ventilation: Windows, roof vents and drop-down feed doors keep horses cool.
- Tires and brakes: Check tread, age and that the brakes work properly.
Aluminum vs Steel
Aluminum trailers are lighter and resist rust, while steel trailers are strong and often cost less up front. Many trailers combine both.
New or Used?
A good used trailer from a respected brand can save you thousands. Just inspect it carefully or ask for detailed photos and a condition report.
